They are finding more and more that regular consumption of yerba mate can cause various kinds of cancer due to the high level of carcinogens in the tea.

Yeah? Someone also told me it's a great aphrodisiac...which makes me wonder about Uruguay :)As far as carcinogens, I'm no scientist, so I'll take their word for it: "Contrary to the reported carcinogenic properties of Mate, there
are scientifically backed reports of anticancer effects. Mate tea has
been shownto have a high cytotoxicity for cancer cells, which is even
higher than that of green tea."

I have done a lot of research on yerba mate' and the only cancer issue that has come up that I am aware of is throat cancer. This occurs when you consume yerba mate' (or any other hot beverage) too hot and burn your throat frequently.
